At Canadian International School (CIS) Abu Dhabi, we strive to create an enriching and dynamic learning environment where students not only excel academically but also grow personally and socially. We are committed to providing a world-class education that aligns with the standards of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) while reflecting the values and excellence of a Canadian curriculum.
In addition to our core academic offerings, we take great pride in our Student Excellence Programs, which include a wide range of extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and enrichment initiatives designed to cultivate well-rounded, confident, and capable individuals. Our programs are designed to challenge students to reach their full potential, both inside and outside the classroom.
We also understand the importance of clear, open communication. Our Parent Communication system ensures that families are always informed about their child’s progress, upcoming events, and school activities. By maintaining a collaborative approach, we empower our students to succeed and our parents to be active participants in their child’s educational journey.

As a testament to one of the cornerstones of our Vision Statement — to respect diversity — CIS students represent about 80 different nationalities, including Canadian (30%), Emirati (14%) and American (8%).
Enrollment is open to English-speaking students who are likely to be successful in the challenging Inquiry-based Canadian curriculum. Our students are encouraged to work hard and play hard. They are supported through the rigorous Alberta curriculum by caring teachers who seek to make success stories of each student. On the other hand, they are also urged to contribute to CIS’s flourishing community through participation in sports, clubs, school improvement initiatives and community service opportunities.
A CIS student is one who is respectful and demands respect in return. A CIS student is one who embraces challenges. A CIS student is one who is learning to be a self-directed thinker and who is preparing himself or herself to be a leader in tomorrow’s technological, international, fast-paced world. A CIS student knows that upon graduation he or she will be ready to take on the world.
The school strives to provide student excellence opportunities that motivate our students to become life-long learners and to improve our students’ self-esteem and confidence as they become ethical citizens and leaders in a global society.
Model United Nations
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.
Model United Nations
MUN involves and teaches researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent.

(NHS & NJHS) : Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school students.
(NHS & NJHS) : Honor Society
More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning:
1. to create enthusiasm for scholarship
2. to stimulate a desire to render service
3. to promote leadership
4. to develop character in the students of secondary schools
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities.
(NHS & NJHS) : Honor Society
NHS chapters are found in all 50 USA states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. They can also be found in areas of Asia; Pakistan has three schools maintaining an active chapter. They further can be found in international and American schools throughout the globe. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service
The NHS motto is noblesse oblige. This is French for “nobility obligates”. Translated this means:
– Whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly.
(NHS & NJHS) : Honor Society
– (Figuratively) One must act in a fashion that conforms with one’s position, and with the reputation that one has earned.
The national minimum standard for membership shall be a cumulative scholastic average of at least 85 percent, B, or 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or the equivalent standard of excellence. Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

The Canadian International School Abu Dhabi is monitored and evaluated by three separate
entities:
– Locally, Abu Dhabi Education and Knowledge (ADEK)
– Nationally, the Ministry of Education (MOE) within the United Arab Emirates
– Internationally, Alberta Education (AB Ed)
While each level has slightly different expectations for reporting and evaluating the school, all three place the knowledge, care, and growth of our students as their priority. Alberta Education requires a three-year Education Plan to be submitted in May of every year and an annual Results Review in November.
ADEK requires a School Development Plan to be submitted 30 days following a bi-annual inspection. Both plans are expected to be responsive to the needs of the school community and reviewed and monitored at least three times in the year by a committee of staff. This document, the CIS Abu Dhabi Education and School Development Plan, is the blending of the expectations of our educational partners, ADEK, MOE, and AB Ed.
The Canadian International School is committed to providing educational excellence that meets each student’s interests, abilities and needs within a common curricular framework. CIS strives to continuously develop a learning environment which reflects and promotes an understanding of, and appreciation for, diversity in our community as an integral part of school life. CIS challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity and curiosity, to achieve their potential, to pursue excellence, and to contribute responsibly in the world of today and tomorrow. Learning experiences that stretch the students’ capacities ultimately lead to personal and academic growth.
Success is defined by having been challenged and, consequently, learning and growing from experience. As members of our global community, students bring diverse experiences to the classroom. To contribute their voices to the community of learners, students need to feel respected and to be respectful of others. What students DO with knowledge is more important than simply comprehending it. Students need the support of parents, teachers and colleagues to take the risk to develop knowledge beyond the recognition and comprehension stages.
Parents play a vital role in their children’s education, and CIS believes that parental involvement in and support of the school and its staff helps to maintain a safe and happy environment for all our students. In doing so, parents also help their children meet their own responsibilities (academic and otherwise) and enable them to become successful learners today and the great leaders of tomorrow. To stay informed about your child’s academic and social progress, extra-curricular opportunities, School events and the latest news at CIS Abu Dhabi is easy, thanks to a range of information sources at your fingertips. If you have a home computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone you will be able to access all of the key information you need to know.

We are pleased to share our academic calendar, which has been officially approved by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). This ensures that our schedule aligns with the educational standards and requirements set by the local authorities, providing students and families with a reliable framework for the school year.
Our school calendar includes key dates such as the start and end of terms, holidays, parent-teacher conferences, and other important events. We encourage parents and students to familiarize themselves with the calendar to help plan ahead and stay informed throughout the academic year.
With ADEK’s approval, our calendar reflects a commitment to delivering a high-quality educational experience, while also ensuring our schedule is in line with the educational expectations of Abu Dhabi.
At CIS, we believe that nutritious, balanced meals play an essential role in supporting our students’ health, well-being, and academic success. Our school cafeteria offers a wide variety of freshly prepared, healthy food options to ensure that every student has access to meals that fuel both body and mind throughout the school day. Our team works diligently to create a welcoming and inclusive dining experience, where students can enjoy their meals in a safe and comfortable environment.
We encourage students to make healthy choices, and we strive to promote good eating habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. The cafeteria is not just a place to eat, but also an opportunity for students to socialize, unwind, and enjoy a positive, community-driven experience.
We offer Hot Meal Voucher Booklets as a convenient and flexible way for students to enjoy nutritious, hot meals in the school cafeteria. These voucher booklets allow parents to pre-purchase meals for their children, ensuring that students have easy access to a variety of freshly prepared, balanced meals throughout the school day.
We offer a Snack and Lunch Classroom Delivery Service. The meals are carefully prepared to meet the dietary needs of young children, offering a variety of healthy, balanced, and delicious options. This ensures that even our youngest learners can enjoy a nutritious meal without the need to leave their classrooms.
Welcome to a school that responds to the needs of 21st century expatriate students. We are living in an international community, so our school must provide a learning environment that cultivates the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to compete in an increasingly global society.
CIS’ curriculum follows the Alberta Program of Studies. Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum is designed to help students achieve their individual potential and create a positive future. The provincial programs of study identify what students are expected to learn and do in all subjects and grades.
At CIS, we encourage well-rounded development of our students, encompassing academics, co-curricular activities, and extra-curricular activities. While academics sharpen intellectual skills, taking part in activities outside of the classroom teaches invaluable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, respect, self-worth, and commitment.
CIS has long been identified for its strong sense of community and parental support. At CIS, all stakeholders work collaboratively to guide students on a path for continuous improvement and to instill in them a passion for lifelong learning. A school rich in academic history, over the past five years our graduates have been accepted to over 50 universities around the world.
Here at CIS we welcome students from all over the world and we pride ourselves on our supportive and inclusive environment. We understand that navigating a new school can often be a stressful experience. We hope our FAQs can provide you with all of the information you need.
